Wilderness Bound combines a new biome, a new exploration structure, a complete wood family, camping items and long-requested building shapes. The list below covers the major player-facing features confirmed in official Minecraft notes while leaving out rumors, community wish lists and unrelated technical changes from the broader Java 26.3 changelog.
The update is already in Java pre-release as of September 6, 2026. That makes the feature set more stable than it was during the first snapshots, but Mojang still warns that development details are subject to change before the final release.

Dappled Forest
The Dappled Forest is the update's headline biome. Mojang says it generates near cold biomes. Its most obvious feature is its canopy: Poplar trees use red, orange and yellow leaf blocks, giving the biome an autumn appearance without relying on a single biome tint.
The forest also contains fallen Poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms, Red Shrubs and a Dappled Forest variant of the Abandoned Camp. Sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes can spawn there, using cold variants where applicable.

Poplar tree and full wood family
Poplar is not just a decorative leaf change. Poplar Logs can be crafted into a new wood set, and Poplar Leaves can drop Poplar Saplings. The sapling can grow into any of the three Poplar leaf-color variants at random.
That creates a renewable loop: discover the biome, collect saplings, bring them home, and farm Poplar wood even if your base is far away. Mojang also lists Poplar Saplings in Wandering Trader trades during testing, giving players another possible acquisition route.

Shelf Mushroom
Shelf Mushrooms generate on Poplar trees and fallen Poplar trees. They have small and large forms. Bone Meal can grow a small Shelf Mushroom into a large one, and breaking the large form drops two mushroom items in the current documented behavior.
Mojang also says Shelf Mushrooms can be used like other mushrooms in stews and have slight bounciness similar to Beds. That gives the feature a mix of decorative, food and movement flavor instead of being only background decoration.
Red Shrub
The Red Shrub appears in small patches on the Dappled Forest floor. It can be used in a Composter, and Bone Meal can attempt to create another Red Shrub in a random adjacent space.
This is a simple feature, but it matters to builders because it carries the biome's warm palette down from the leaf canopy into low vegetation. The Red Shrub guide focuses on collecting and multiplying it.
Abandoned Camps
Abandoned Camps are one of the most useful features for players who like exploration. They can generate in many different Overworld biomes, and Mojang created a design variant for each eligible biome.
The structures contain chests and barrels. Later snapshots updated camp loot and added new Explorer Maps, turning a camp into a possible starting point for a longer route rather than a one-time container stop.

Explorer Maps
Snapshot 7 expands Explorer Maps available through Abandoned Camps. Some locate selected camp variants, while others point to major structures including Ancient Cities, Trial Chambers, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, Jungle Pyramids, Warm Ocean Ruins and Woodland Mansions.
Explorer Maps also became their own item types rather than simply renamed Filled Maps, with map-system changes affecting copying and zooming. Some map names changed later in the cycle, so late-snapshot verification matters.
Straw Bed
The Straw Bed is designed for travel. It lets a player sleep through the night without replacing the current spawn point. Three Hay Bales craft four Straw Beds in the documented Java recipe, and each Straw Bed is consumed after successful sleep.
That makes it useful for long expeditions where you want to keep a permanent respawn point at home. It is not a cheaper permanent bed and should be thought of as consumable camping equipment.
Cushion
The Cushion is a placeable seat in all 16 wool colors. It is crafted from three Wool Slabs of the same color, and Mojang's Wilderness Bound announcement also says players can find Cushions in Abandoned Camps.
Cushions have unusual placement rules that let them work across many furniture designs. Snapshot 7 also changed their vibration behavior, which is why older Snapshot 3 instructions may no longer match the latest testing build.
Wool stairs and slabs
Every colored Wool block receives matching stair and slab variants. Mojang explicitly confirms that these shapes retain Wool's ability to dampen vibrations. That makes them useful both for decoration and for functional sculk-related building.
The new Wool Slabs also matter because they are the crafting ingredient for Cushions.
Concrete stairs and slabs
Snapshot 7 adds Concrete Stairs and Slabs for all 16 Concrete colors. Builders can finally keep Concrete's smooth texture through slopes and half-height surfaces without switching to another material.

What is not on this list?
The list does not include every technical change in Java 26.3. Command syntax, data-pack versions, rendering details, server-management changes and bug fixes belong to the version history rather than the player-facing Wilderness Bound feature set.
It also excludes features that appear only in community suggestions, social-media speculation or wish lists. A player-facing addition should be treated as confirmed only when Mojang or Minecraft documents it in official material.
When stable 26.3 arrives, compare the items above with the final release notes before treating snapshot-specific details as permanent.
