A 26.3 reveal recap with Wool Slabs/Stairs and the Dappled Forest feature set.

Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs finally extend Minecraft's colored Wool blocks into stair and half-block shapes in 26.3. Mojang added a stair and slab variant for every colored Wool block, and the new shapes retain one of wool's most important technical properties: they can be used like other Wool blocks to dampen vibrations.

The addition is also mechanically connected to another Wilderness Bound feature. Cushions are crafted from Wool Slabs, so slabs are not only decorative; they are a crafting ingredient for the update's new sit-able furniture.

How many Wool Stair and Slab colors are there?

Minecraft's standard Wool palette has 16 colors, and Snapshot 1 says each colored Wool block receives a matching stair and slab variant. That gives builders consistent shapes across the full dye palette rather than only a few neutral colors.

This is particularly useful for pixel art, roofs, soft furniture, tent builds, theater seating and color-coded interiors where switching to stone or wood for a half-height detail breaks the palette.

Wool Slab recipe

Current 26.3 behavior follows the familiar slab pattern:

  • place 3 matching Wool blocks in one horizontal row;
  • receive 6 Wool Slabs of that color.

Use the same color within one recipe. A red, blue and white mixture is not a shortcut to three mixed slabs.

Wool Stair recipe

The stair recipe follows the standard staircase pattern:

  • use 6 Wool blocks of one matching color;
  • arrange them in the familiar stair shape;
  • receive 4 Wool Stairs.

If a testing build ever disagrees with an older reveal or tutorial, use the current in-game recipe book and current 26.3 notes as the better reference.

Vibration dampening

Mojang explicitly says Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs can be used like other Wool blocks to dampen vibrations. This is a major technical distinction from simply adding a cloth texture to generic stairs.

Sculk-related builds often use wool to control vibration paths. New shapes can make it easier to combine vibration management with compact or decorative geometry. However, always test an exact redstone/sculk design because block shape, placement and neighboring blocks can matter beyond the material tag alone.

Wool Slabs are the Cushion ingredient

Snapshot 3 uses 3 Wool Slabs of the same color to craft a Cushion. That creates a small resource chain:

  1. obtain or dye Wool;
  2. craft matching Wool Slabs;
  3. use three slabs to craft a matching Cushion;
  4. place the Cushion and interact to sit.

The Cushion guide covers the later placement and vibration changes that do not apply exactly like ordinary wool.

Building ideas

Wool stairs and slabs are useful wherever a build should look soft or fabric-covered:

  • sofas and armchairs;
  • tent roofs;
  • layered carpets and raised platforms;
  • colorful stadium seating;
  • theater interiors;
  • bunk beds and bedroom trim;
  • plush-looking fantasy roofs;
  • market awnings;
  • color-coded minigame areas.

Before 26.3, builders often had to use full Wool blocks, carpets, or a differently textured stair material. The new shapes reduce those compromises.

Do Wool Stairs behave exactly like stone stairs?

They share the geometric concept of stairs, but material behavior differs. The official notes specifically preserve wool's vibration-dampening quality. Tool behavior also received bug fixes during the snapshot cycle; Snapshot 2 fixed Wool Stairs and Slabs not being broken faster when using shears.

They are therefore not simply stone stairs with a wool texture. Their material family affects how they interact with vibration mechanics and tools.

Can Wool Slabs be waterlogged?

Stair and slab block-state behavior generally includes familiar placement shapes and water interactions, but Mojang's player-facing Snapshot 1 notes focus on colors and vibration dampening rather than documenting every technical block state. If your build depends on a specific waterlogging or redstone state, verify it in the exact 26.3 build.

For ordinary decoration, the 16-color stair/slab geometry is the stable headline feature.

Are they flammable?

Wool is a combustible material in normal Minecraft, so fabric-heavy decorative builds should be designed carefully around fire and lava. Do not assume the new shapes become fireproof just because many older stair blocks are stone-based.

If you build a wool campsite around a campfire, leave appropriate spacing and test the setup safely before copying it into a valuable structure.

Wool vs Concrete stairs and slabs

26.3 also adds Concrete Stairs and Concrete Slabs in all 16 concrete colors. The two families fill different aesthetic roles:

  • Wool: soft texture, fabric builds, vibration dampening;
  • Concrete: smooth solid color, modern architecture and hard surfaces.

Together they dramatically expand color-consistent shape building.

See Minecraft Concrete Stairs & Slabs for the second family.

Survival material planning

For large wool builds, sheep farming is the obvious renewable supply. Shear sheep instead of repeatedly killing them, maintain dye resources for the colors you need, then craft stairs/slabs in batches.

If your main goal is Cushions, remember that the Cushion recipe consumes Wool Slabs rather than full Wool blocks directly. Plan enough slabs for both furniture and structural use.

Java and Bedrock notes

Wool Stairs and Slabs are part of the cross-edition Wilderness Bound feature set, but recipe availability and bug fixes can arrive in different preview builds. During development, match any recipe or behavior report to the exact Java snapshot/pre-release or Bedrock Preview where it was observed.

At a glance

Minecraft 26.3 adds Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs in all 16 Wool colors. Current recipes follow standard stair/slab patterns: 6 matching Wool blocks produce 4 stairs, while 3 matching Wool blocks in a row produce 6 slabs. Mojang confirms the new shapes retain wool-style vibration dampening, and Wool Slabs are also used to craft Cushions.
