Minecraft Wilderness Bound released on September 15, 2026. The game drop launched for both main Minecraft editions on that date: Java Edition 26.3 is the stable Java release, while Bedrock Edition 26.50 is the corresponding Bedrock release.
That date is no longer an estimate. Mojang first confirmed September 15 in the Java 26.3 Release Candidate 2 notes on September 11, published Release Candidate 3 on September 14, and then announced Wilderness Bound as available to play on September 15.

What version is Wilderness Bound?
On Java Edition, Wilderness Bound is the gameplay drop shipped with Minecraft 26.3. Java version numbers also cover technical changes, bug fixes, data-pack changes and other software-level updates, so “26.3” and “Wilderness Bound” are closely related but not perfectly interchangeable terms.
On Bedrock Edition, the release is 26.50. Bedrock uses its own version line, so a player should not look for “Bedrock 26.3” when trying to confirm the Wilderness Bound release.
For the feature-focused overview, see Wilderness Bound. For the Java version history, see Minecraft 26.3.
Did Java and Bedrock release on the same day?
Yes. Mojang's September 15 launch announcement says the third game drop of 2026 is available in both Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and Minecraft: Java Edition.
That does not mean every device receives every later hotfix at exactly the same moment. Bedrock updates can roll out by platform approval, and Mojang explicitly notes this for post-release hotfixes. But the game-drop release date itself is September 15 for both editions.
The Java vs Bedrock guide explains the version-number difference and which post-launch changes are edition-specific.
Do you still need snapshots or Preview to play it?
No. Snapshots and Preview/Beta builds were required while Wilderness Bound was still in development. After September 15, the game-drop features became part of the stable Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 releases.
Java snapshots now represent development after 26.3. In fact, Java 26.4 Snapshot 1 began on September 22, so enabling snapshots today means opting into the next Java development cycle rather than simply enabling Wilderness Bound.
Bedrock also continues to publish Preview/Beta builds for future work, but stable 26.50 is the release that brought Wilderness Bound to normal Bedrock players.
What happened immediately after release?
Bedrock received quick post-launch fixes. 26.51 addressed a crash affecting some worlds with densely connected block structures. 26.52, released September 25, fixed additional issues including Cushions disappearing when unloaded chunks were reloaded.
These hotfixes do not change the September 15 release date. They are normal post-launch maintenance and are useful when troubleshooting a Bedrock-specific problem.
Java moved forward into the 26.4 snapshot cycle on September 22. That is another clear sign that 26.3 is no longer a pre-release branch.
Should you start a new world for Wilderness Bound?
You can use Wilderness Bound in a normal stable world. You do not need a disposable testing world just because the update was once in snapshots.
However, world-generation features still follow Minecraft's normal chunk behavior. Dappled Forests and Abandoned Camps are easiest to discover in terrain that has not already been generated in an older version. Updating a long-running world does not rebuild every existing explored chunk.
If you want the new exploration features near your base, plan routes into unexplored territory. If you are starting a fresh world, the new features can generate naturally wherever their normal conditions are met.
Why did older pages say the date was unannounced?
Before Release Candidate 2, Mojang had not published the exact day. On September 11 the official Release Candidate 2 notes changed that situation by stating that Wilderness Bound was coming on September 15.
Older snapshot-era reports that said “date not announced” were correct for their publication date but became stale once Mojang published the launch date. This guide now uses the final release announcement as the primary answer and keeps the earlier milestones only as historical context.
