Using Bone Meal on a Red Shrub grows a Red Shrub in a random adjacent space if possible. The “if possible” wording matters. The game needs a valid nearby placement location, so a shrub boxed in by unsuitable blocks may fail to spread where you expect.
For efficient propagation, give the plant open valid ground around it rather than surrounding it with solid decoration. Repeated Bone Meal use can then expand your patch without another long biome trip.
Is the Red Shrub renewable?
Yes, the Bone Meal spreading mechanic gives players a repeatable way to increase the number of shrubs after obtaining a starter plant. Bone Meal itself is a renewable resource in normal Minecraft survival, so Red Shrubs can support large landscaping projects.

- prepare an open garden or woodland floor;
- place one or more Red Shrubs;
- use Bone Meal to spread them into adjacent valid spaces;

Snapshot 1 explicitly lists Wandering Trader access for Poplar Saplings and Shelf Mushrooms, but the same feature section does not make that explicit claim for Red Shrubs. Waiting for a trader is therefore not a confirmed acquisition route for Red Shrubs in the sources used here.
Similar-looking new plants do not automatically share the same acquisition methods.
How much Bone Meal should you bring?
There is no need for an exact universal number because your landscaping goal and available placement spaces differ. For a first test, a modest stack lets you see the spread pattern and decide whether you prefer a dense carpet or scattered accents.
